Definition
In 2008, the CRS Focus Group was born. CRS Focus Groups are specialist subject interest groups, in subjects relevant to the CRS mission.
Objectives
- The delivery of high quality science in specialist areas, relevant to the CRS mission.
- Provide a forum for scientific interactions (electronic or face to face) in specialist topics, relevant to the CRS mission
Operations
The Groups are headed by one or preferably two scientists and Focus Group Leaders are required to serve for a maximum of 3 years. Focus Group leaders are elected at the annual Focus Group meetings, which are normally held at the Annual Meeting. It is desirable for Focus Groups to evolve in accordance with the needs and activity of the science. Membership of more than one Focus Group is encouraged. A dedicated web space will be made available for Focus Groups to interact and share knowledge on the latest experimental techniques, the latest publications or simply chat about job vacancies and their careers.
Starting a Focus Group
Focus groups may be set up by completing a “New Focus Group Application ”. Following approval by the CRS Board of Directors, Focus Groups become operational.
Discussion Forums
Discussion areas for focus groups are limited to members of a particular group. One must log in for read and write privileges. Members may begin discussion topics, reply to posts and share documents.
Scientific Output
Focus Groups may output their science via one of six means as detailed below.
Contribute:
- a mini symposium session at the Annual Meeting (a coherent theme and 4 speakers),
- a round table discussion at the Annual Meeting (interactive session with 2 or 3 speakers),
- a Workshop at the Annual Meeting (1 day workshop around a suitable theme and with a strong teaching component),
- a column or articles in the CRS Newsletter,
- a webinar or webinar series,
- a Satellite Meeting outside of the Annual Meeting calendar (a 1 – 2 day meeting with a coherent theme on a hot topic).
Focus Groups will be asked to outline their plans at the Annual Meeting using the Focus Group Planning Form
