Summary
This work reports the first use of multi-nuclear (19F and 1H) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study both dissolution media ingress and drug egress from a hydrophilic polymer matrix controlled release system in a USP-IV dissolution cell under pharmacopeial conditions. Spatial maps of water penetration, tablet swelling and dissolution, as well as the mobilization and distribution of the drug are quantified and visualized. Such comprehensive information is key for: (i) the correct interpretation of conventional drug dissolution profiles and (ii) the optimal design (QbD) of controlled release formulations.
