NEW CRS FOUNDATION
POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP FOR 2012

The CRS Foundation is pleased to announce a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship for 2012, honoring Professor Sung Wan Kim, Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Distinguished Professor of Bioengineering, at University of Utah. The fellowship honors his exemplary service to CRS and delivery science, and will be awarded to an outstanding recent postdoctoral individual at the 2012 CRS Annual Meeting.

HONORING PROFESSOR SUNG WAN KIM

As a pioneer in drug delivery research, Professor Kim has focused on hydrogels, biodegradable drug conjugates, self-regulating drug delivery, and stimuli sensitive polymers. A recent article in the Journal of Controlled Release chronicles his career from biomaterials to gene delivery.  He has worked extensively in medical polymers, especially blood compatible polymers. His recent research includes design of novel polymers for the delivery of protein drugs, cells and genes. Professor Kim is highly recognized throughout the field with honors from the Controlled Release Society (College of Fellows and Founders Award) as well as the Rosenblatt Prize, AACP Volwiler Award, AAPS Dale Wurster Award, the Clemson Basic Biomaterials Award, AAPS Research Achievement in Drug Delivery, and many more. He founded the International Symposium on Recent Advances in Drug Delivery at University of Utah, serves as a member of the NIH Study Section, and is on the Editorial Boards of several research journals. Professor Kim is also an elected member of U.S. National Academies: Institute of Medicine and National Academy of Engineering.  

FELLOWSHIP INFORMATION

The Sung Wan Kim Postdoctoral Fellowship Recipient will:
  • Receive a one-year $30,000 fellowship
  • Relocate to a research laboratory in a new environment for the fellowship
  • Receive a complimentary registration to the 39th CRS Annual Meeting & Exposition in Quebec City, Canada, July 15-18, 2012
  • Participate with an abstract and poster in the 2012 CRS Annual Meeting
  • Serve as an invited speaker at the 2013 CRS Annual Meeting to present outcomes of the research

Selection Criteria for the Sung Wan Kim Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • Candidate must be a graduate student who has completed his/her Ph.D. by July 2012 or a recent postdoctoral individual, currently undertaking or recently completing research in delivery science or an associated field.
  • Candidate may be from academia, government, or industry.
  • Membership in the Controlled Release Society is required.
  • Candidate will demonstrate excellence in scientific research and strong leadership potential.

Requirements for acceptance:

  • Attendance at the CRS 2012 Annual Meeting & Exposition in Quebec City, Canada, where the award will be presented
  • Submission of a written perspective (upon completion of the fellowship year) to the CRS for publication
  • Presentation of the outcomes of the fellowship year at the 40th CRS Annual Meeting & Exposition in Honolulu, Hawaii,July 21-24, 2013

APPLICATION PROCESS

Individuals must apply online by March 12, 2012.
Only complete submission packets, submitted at one time, will be considered. 
 
A complete submission packet includes the following documents:
1. Completed application form
2. Curriculum vitae
3. Brief summary of current research
4. List of patents and patent applications; List of publications and meeting presentations (posters and talks)
5. Personal statement of research achievements, future research, professional goals
6. Letter of recommendation from advisor/sponsor. Only this document may be submitted separately, if desired. See application.

Selection
March 12, 2012
is the deadline for application. The Kim Postdoctoral Fellowship Selection Committee, composed of CRS past presidents, will select the candidate based upon the listed criteria.
 
Notification
The award recipient and all candidates will be notified no later than May 1, 2012. Public announcement will be made prior to and also onsite at the CRS 2012 Annual Meeting & Exposition in Quebec City, Canada.
