CRS T. Nagai Postdoctoral Research Achievement Award

Criteria:
The CRS T. Nagai Postdoctoral Research Achievement Award is a coveted prize among the awards presented by the Controlled Release Society. The award is presented at the annual CRS meeting and exposition to a postdoctoral researcher who is currently undertaking or has recently completed his/her postdoctoral research and to his/her advisor. Candidates for the award may be from academia, industry, or government.

Purpose:
The CRS T. Nagai Postdoctoral Research Achievement Award has been established to recognize those who have made an outstanding postdoctoral research achievement in controlled release science and technology.

Nomination Process:
Nominations must be in writing. Nominations may be submitted by a member of CRS.

Letters of nomination must include an abbreviated curriculum vitae, abstract of work (if available), examples of quality research papers, patents related to the work, and a list of publications on the subject. These required documents must be sent to Linda Schmitt no later than January 31, 2010.

Selection Process:
The CRS T. Nagai Postdoctoral Research Achievement Award Committee will be responsible for the selection of the award.

Award:
The awardee will receive:

  • Special Award
  • $3000 to the principal recipient and advisor
  • Complimentary Registration to the principal recipient and advisor


Notification:
Awardee will be notified no later than April 15, 2010.

CRS - Nagai Innovation Award 2009 Winners
Dr. Shirui MaoDr. Shirui Mao obtained her undergraduate and masters degrees from Shenyang Pharmaceutical University (SPU) in 1994 and then joined the SPU faculty. In 2004, she earned her Ph.D. degree from Philipps University, Marburg, Germany, and then worked as a post-doc in Prof. Kissel’s group until 2006. She is now an associate professor at SPU, has authored more than 60 publications, and acts as a manuscript reviewer for a variety of publications. She was selected as one of the 10 top reviewers of JCR in 2006 and 2007.


Dr. Thomas KisselDr. Thomas Kissel is a professor of pharmaceutics and biopharmacy and department head at the Philipps University in Marburg, Germany, where he has been since 1991. He received his B.S. (pharmacy) degree from the University of Freiburg (1971) and M.S. (chemistry, 1974) and Ph.D. (medicinal chemistry, 1976) degrees from the University of Marburg. From 1978 to 1991 he was head of the Drug Delivery Systems Department at Sandoz Pharma AG, Basle, Switzerland. Dr. Kissel has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed articles and chapters on various aspects of drug delivery systems. His research interests have included synthesis and characterization of biodegradable polyesters, parenteral depot delivery systems for proteins and vaccines, non-viral drug delivery systems based on polyplexes, transepithelial transport and metabolism of peptides, and drug targeting using colloidal carriers. He was dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1995–1996. He served as president of the Controlled Release Society in 1998–1999. He has received the CRS Founders Award (2002) and the Maurice-Marie Janot Award (2002). He is also co-editor of Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews and a European editor of the Journal of Controlled Release. He was chair of the Gordon Research Conference on Drug Carriers in Medicine and Biology (2006). He currently serves on several editorial boards and is a member of the German Pharmaceutical Society, Controlled Release Society, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, and American Chemical Society. In 2004 he was appointed adjunct professor of pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Utah, followed by his appointment as adjunct professor at Jilin University (2008) and visiting professor at Shenyang Pharmaceutical University (2008). Since 2005, he has been a speaker of the DFG (German Research Foundation) Research Group 627 “Polymeric Nano-carriers for Pulmonary Drug Delivery.”
