The Indian Chapter of Controlled Release Society (CRS IC), one of the 15 global chapters of CRS Inc. USA, organized a webinar exclusively for its members on May 2nd, 2020 at 3.00 pm on the topic “VACCINE MANUFACTURING: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES”. Dr. S. S. Pisal, Director, R&D and Manufacturing, Serum Institute of India Pvt. Ltd. (SIPL), Pune was the invited speaker.  Dr. Pisal has been associated SIPL since 2007 and also leads the Intellectual Property Cell at SIPL. His vast research experience encompasses formulation development, lyophilization, upstream/downstream process development for vaccines and monoclonal antibodies, and vaccine delivery.

Dr. Anil Pethe member of CRSIC Executive Committee was the moderator of the webinar and introduced the speaker to the audience. The webinar started with a small introduction to SIPL and its business model as the world’s largest manufacturer of vaccines. Then Dr. Pisal went onto share his experience in lyophilization of vaccines,  a critical process in the development and shelf-life of vaccines. He explained the systematic approach in optimizing the lyophilization cycle of vaccines using two case studies involving a live attenuated rotavirus vaccine, Rotasil® and a meningococcal ACYWX Conjugate Vaccine, MenFive®.

It was then followed by a Question & Answer session where Dr. Pisal addressed all the technical queries posed by the attendees including their efforts for covid 19 vaccine. The webinar was attended by about 100 CRS IC members and the session ended with delivering the vote of thanks by CRS IC executive committee members.
