Summary

Although "micro-encapsulation" seems to be the correct term for active ingredient delivery systems in consumer and diversified products for the foreseeable future, "nanoscale" is currently the buzzword and promises to hold new and interesting options and applications for nanoscale delivery systems. After pointing to some limitations of microscale systems, merging nanoscale systems and their applications will be reviewed. Since the area is teeming with innovations, the view taken here can by necessity only be a rather personal one reflecting experience in an international corporate environment.
