The Controlled Release Society (CRS) is proud to present a distinguished suite of awards that celebrate excellence, innovation, and leadership in the field of delivery science and technology. These honors recognize outstanding contributions across a range of categories, including scientific achievement, early career impact, industry leadership, and service to the Society.

Each award reflects the core values of CRS and our commitment to advancing the science and supporting emerging talent in our field. These prestigious awards are presented annually during the CRS Annual Meeting & Exposition.

Community Impact Award

The Controlled Release Society grants this honor to a member who has demonstrated an emerging or sustained commitment to the global development of sciences and people in the controlled release area through their professional activities up to December 31 of the year before the award is presented. The Community Impact Award recognizes significant contributions to controlled release science and services to the CRS scientific community. The CRS retains the right not to grant any award for any given year if the candidates are not at the level of scientific excellence required.

CRS Exceptional Leadership Award- By the Young Scientist Committee*

The Young Scientist Leadership Award is established to recognize and honour CRS members who have made outstanding contributions to the Young Scientist Committee (YSC) and have shown dedication to the development and success of young scientists in the field, regardless of the career stage, ensuring that individuals at any point in their career journey, from early-career to senior leaders, are eligible for consideration. The recipient of the Young Scientist Leadership Award is expected to embody the values of inclusivity, diversity, and equity in their mentorship practices. The awardee should also demonstrate an innovative approach to delivering research that is expected to inspire the next generation of researchers.

The CRS retains the right not to award any award for any given year if the candidates are not at the level of scientific excellence required.

Distinguished Service Award

Established in 1994, the Distinguished Service Award is presented to a CRS member who has exhibited exceptional commitment and service to the Society and is selected by the Board of Directors. The award is not automatically given each year, only in the years when there is an exceptional member who fits the criteria.

The CRS retains the right not to award any award for any given year if the candidates are not at the level of scientific excellence required.

Drug Delivery and Translational Research Journal Outstanding Paper Award

The award, co-sponsored by Springer, is given to the lead author of an outstanding original paper published in Drug Delivery and Translational Research related specifically to the field of drug delivery and translational research.  The article will have been published the previous year.

Founders Award

The Controlled Release Society grants this honor to a current CRS member through the nomination and issuance of the award and is internationally recognized for outstanding contributions in the science and technology of controlled release.

The CRS retains the right not to award any award for any given year if the candidates are not at the level of scientific excellence required.

Industry Achievement Award

The Controlled Release Society grants this honor to a CRS member at nomination and issuance of the award who is widely regarded for outstanding industrial and translational contributions to delivery science and technology.

The award aims to recognize individuals who have spent the majority of their careers in industry. They can hold adjunct or visiting professorships at universities, but their primary affiliation should be with a company. The individual should have ample evidence of industry leadership and achievements, a clear focus on product and patient innovation, plus contributions to successful translation, regulatory approval, and/or market introduction and patient impact. In addition, the ideal candidate has played a prominent role in educating and attracting next-generation industry delivery scientists.

Jorge Heller Journal of Controlled Release Outstanding Paper Award

The award supported by Elsevier is given to the lead author of an outstanding original paper published in the Journal of Controlled Release related specifically to the field of delivery and bioactives (not an invited, a review, or from a special meeting). 

The article will have been published the previous year in the Journal of Controlled Release.

PhD Thesis Award

Supported by Elsevier

We are inviting scientists who completed their PhD thesis in 2024 in Drug Delivery Science to apply for the CRS PhD Thesis Award. This award serves to recognize outstanding doctoral research and scientific contributions to the multidisciplinary field of drug delivery.

The CRS retains the right not to award any award for any given year if the candidates are not at the level of scientific excellence required.

Rising Women in Science Award

The Controlled Release Society grants this honor to a woman scientist with fewer than 10 years of post-PhD experience who is dedicated to excellence in science, leadership, and the promotion of women in their communities.

The CRS retains the right not to award any award for any given year if the candidates are not at the level of scientific excellence required.

Samyang Award

The Samyang CRS Award in Honor of Sung Wan Kim recognizes a current CRS member must has been a CRS member for not less than the previous 5 years consecutively. The nominee must be between 41-55 years old as of December 31 in the year the award is presented. Finally, the nominee must be present at the CRS Annual Meeting to receive the award.

The CRS retains the right not to award any award for any given year if the candidates are not at the level of scientific excellence required.

Transdermal Delivery Kydonieus Foundation Award

The Controlled Release Society Transdermal Delivery Kydonieus Foundation Award recognizes CRS members who have made outstanding contributions to the field of transdermal delivery science and technology over a minimum of five (5) years. Contributions may have been technical, scientific, and/or managerial in the field of transdermal delivery, commercial development, education, and/or leadership within the areas of interest to CRS.

The CRS retains the right not to award any award for any given year if the candidates are not at the level of scientific excellence required.

Women in Science Award

The Controlled Release Society grants this honor to a woman scientist who must be internationally recognized for outstanding contributions in science and technology.

Young Investigator Award

The Controlled Release Society Young Investigator Award recognizes a current Controlled Release Society member who has made outstanding contributions in the science of controlled release.
