Summary

For analysis of drug absorption across the intestinal mucosa suitable in vitro models are necessary to simulate the processes in human body. Cell cultures are valid models but implicate timeconsuming preparation and high expenses. Polymeric membranes provide a suitable alternative overcoming cell culture drawbacks. Establishing and validating such a model requires a suitable analytical technique for non-destructive and chemically selective characterization of the system. We apply confocal Raman microscopy as a novel approach for chemically resolved characterization of a membrane-based drug permeation model. Chemical composition, three dimensional morphology as well as the coating procedure and changes upon permeation experiments can be analyzed in a non-destructive and spatially resolved way.
