Self-healing materials and self-repairing systems are of great interest and importance in many industrial sectors. In this study, lubricant-filled microcapsules of polyurea were prepared and used in liquid-solid self-lubricating coatings. Various types and amounts of lubricants could be successfully encapsulated. A novel thermal spray coating process was developed in parallel, tailor-made for the use of these thermally labile capsules in high-temperature coating processes. Coatings of thermally sprayed lubricant-filled capsules were prepared and lubricant-release on demand showed in lab-scale scratch and tribological experiments. These novel liquid-solid coatings open for a new generation of self-repairing systems, avoiding unlubricated contacts in rotating/sliding parts and improving the lifetime of moving parts.
