Summary

A putative relationship between the structure of PEO-PPO-PEO block co-polymers and their interactions with biological membranes was developed. A combination of cytotoxicity and haemolysis assays were used to show a direct correlation between cytotoxic effects and the membrane binding constant of the PEO-PPO-PEO block co-polymers. Both cytotoxicity and the strength of membrane interaction were found to depend on the chemical composition of the co-polymers; with a 2D parabolic relationship existing between the chemical components of the PEO-PPO-PEO block co-polymers and their effect on biological membranes.
