Observations/Thoughts/Trends/Musings

Greetings, Reader. If you’ve made it this far again, I applaud you. You may notice the article is longer than those previous. Over 250 patent abstracts were reviewed for this quarter. That larger number (I usually go through about 150 abstracts) may be due to the upgraded search engine available on the public US Patent website. The engine offers more options for searching and displaying results. I encourage you to take a look at the website yourself and test it out. It’s a fun way to spend a weekend…

Beyond the higher number of patents observed, the same trends seen previously are seen here. Pharmaceutical applications dominate the patents but there are many biological and medical applications that are distinct from traditional pharma applications represented. Agricultural patents were not very prevalent this time and slightly more patents in the consumer products and cosmetics area were observed. Whether or not these findings are related to algorithm changes in the search engine remains to be seen…

Until next quarter, happy holidays.
