Rute Nunes is currently a Junior Researcher at Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB)/ Innovation and Health Research (i3S), University of Porto, Portugal. She is a MSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences (2013) granted by Instituto Superior de Ciências da Saúde do Norte (ISCSN), Gandra, Portugal, and holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (2018) from Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas de Abel Salazar (ICBAS), University of Porto, Portugal. Her PhD work was developed mainly at INEB/I3S, Porto, Portugal, in the Nanomedicines & Translational Drug Delivery Group, under the supervision of Professor Bruno Sarmento. It consisted in the development of nanotechnology-based systems for the rectal delivery of antiretroviral drugs intended to be used as rectal microbicides in the prevention of sexual HIV transmission. Her broad research interest includes nanomedicine, nanotechnology-based systems for drug delivery, biomaterials and regenerative medicine. Her current research is focused on cell therapies, tissue engineering and smart nanomedicines. She is the first author of 4 peer-reviewed articles and 3 book chapters. In addition, she is the co-author of 11 papers published in high impact journals, resulting from different collaborations. As a researcher, she describes herself as a passionate and versatile researcher, capable of integrating different projects, being highly adaptable to different situations and challenges. Besides being a dedicated worker, she is always enthusiastic to learn and develop new skills. When she is not working, she likes to write poetry, read and spend time with her family in close contact with nature.
